Bosaso, Puntland – June 2025
In a significant step toward inclusive education, the Puntland Disability Organization Network (PDON), in collaboration with Save the Children and under the NORAD Framework Program, has successfully established School Inclusion Teams (SITs) in four NORAD-supported schools in Bosaso.
Promoting Inclusion for All Learners
The initiative aims to create welcoming school environments that address the diverse needs of all students, especially learners with disabilities. The formation of SITs marks a foundational move to identify and overcome barriers to inclusive education within these schools.
Key Objectives and Activities
The project focused on:
- Formally establishing SITs in each of the four schools.
- Clearly defining and distributing roles and responsibilities among SIT members.
- Engaging school leadership alongside SIT members to align with inclusive education goals.
- Providing members with printed guidelines to ensure clarity and accountability.
- Encouraging collaboration during meetings and planning sessions.
The activity involved direct engagement with school headteachers and designated SIT members, with five members appointed per school. Meetings were held to discuss responsibilities, confirm commitment, and draft initial action plans for inclusive education efforts.
Participation and Gender Balance
A total of 20 SIT members were appointed across the four schools, 5 SIT members to each school, with an inclusive gender representation:
The schools involved were Biyo Kulule, Xaaji Mire, Shibiin, and Hanaqaad, each contributing five SIT members.
Outcomes Achieved
- SITs formally established in all four schools, providing a dedicated team to champion inclusive education.
- Clear documentation of roles and responsibilities distributed to all SIT members.
- Initial action plans developed to prioritize inclusive education activities.
Looking Ahead
The establishment of School Inclusion Teams in Bosaso’s schools sets a promising precedent for fostering inclusive learning environments across Puntland. With committed teams in place and a clear roadmap ahead, these schools are better positioned to support every learner’s right to education.
