Garowe, Puntland – August 9, 2021
The Puntland Disability Organizations Network (PDON), in collaboration with OPHRD, CSOs, Parliament, and key government ministries, hosted a two-day advocacy workshop aimed at promoting the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) — with a special focus on children’s rights.
Held at the New Rays Hotel from August 7–8, the workshop brought together a cross-section of stakeholders to deepen understanding, share experiences, and strengthen cooperation on inclusive rights for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Puntland.
Uniting for Inclusive Change
In his opening remarks, PDON Chairman Ali Abdi Aden expressed gratitude to the participants for their commitment, emphasizing the importance of collective action to uphold and protect the rights of PWDs, particularly children with disabilities.
Participants included representatives from Disabled Persons Organizations (DPOs), parliamentarians, ministry officials, and civil society leaders. They engaged in highly interactive sessions featuring presentations, discussions, Q&A forums, and brainstorming activities.
Key Topics Covered
The workshop focused on four major areas:
- Challenges and Rights Violations Faced by PWDs in Puntland
- Understanding the CRPD and its Articles
- The Role of DPOs in Advocating CRPD Implementation
- Opportunities and Barriers to Inclusion in Puntland’s Context
Facilitators presented recent statistics and facts highlighting ongoing discrimination and systemic challenges PWDs face in accessing education, health, and public services. One session emphasized how to transform barriers into pathways for inclusion, especially for children with disabilities.
Major Presentations Delivered
- Challenges for PWDs in Somalia – Based on national and international reports.
- Mainstreaming Children with Disabilities – Practical solutions to improve inclusion.
- CRPD Articles Explained – Focused on children’s rights and local relevance.
Notable Outcomes
The workshop concluded with a strong commitment from attendees to:
✅ Support government efforts to implement the CRPD — with a spotlight on inclusive services for children with disabilities.
✅ Use communication channels and public platforms to raise awareness of CRPD rights.
✅ Advocate through media, especially social media, to influence public opinion and policy.
A CRPD Advocacy Club was also established, consisting of nine members from diverse DPOs. The club will:
- Launch community radio programs on CRPD articles
- Share advocacy content through social media
- Publish disability rights content (articles, videos)
- Host community dialogues on inclusion and rights
This gathering created space for solidarity, new partnerships, and a shared vision for a more inclusive Puntland — where every child’s rights are respected, regardless of ability.
